More On Shaving - Creams and Soaps

Well did I get a few emails about that Gillette Fusion piece!
Many asking for other tips and info about shaving. It seems like our fathers have been a bit lazy in passing on age old ways of getting a decent shave every single time, Shaving knowledge and technique is not instinctive, all men need to learn the art and unfortunately many learn it badly. Common problems such as razor burn, bloodspots, ingrown hairs and redness are more often than not caused by bad shaving technique.

Well here's the skinny on Gels, Foams, Creams and Soaps.

Gels and Foams -
Before I start I'll say up front I am no lover of shaving gels, I find them gunky, over reliant on chemicals and harsh on the skin, if you are going to use one grab something like Clinique’s M Shave Aloe Gel, I’d avoid store own brands and dodgy market stuff as many of them bear ingredients lists that have little resemblence to good quality products that you’d want to put on your face, if you are still using the thick white foam you get from an aerosol then stop now! Leave that stuff to the oldies who think Old Spice is a great cologne, nuff said.

Soaps -
Traditional soaps come in a wooden or pottery bowl that you can buy soap refills for, they produce a thick whipped creamy lather when used with a decent badger hair brush (we’ll talk about them next time) they contain oils, herbs and plant extracts that not only leave your skin smelling good enough to eat but give a smooth shave and can help with some skin conditions. My favorite, Limes from Geo Trumper contains extract of West Indian limes for normal to oily skin, many makers now produce unscented varieties. I would tend to avoid the stick type soaps (Palmolive being a big brand) as they tend to be hard to get a decent lather with.

Creams -
A cross between hard soaps and gels, creams contain glycerine which helps to make an exceptionally smooth and creamy lather that holds plenty of water and leaves the skin smooth and soft. You can use your fingers to apply it to your face and lather up with a brush if needed or use it with a shaving bowl/mug to produce a thick lather. Geo Trumper and Taylor’s of Old Bond Street make some top quality creams fragranced with essential oils and extracts and made with natural ingredients, they come in tubes, tubs and jars.

Other Gunk and Junk -
Oils, normal soap and other stuff should be avoided, they can clog pores, cause ingrown hairs or not provide enough lubrication for the blade.

Just how may blades do you need on a razor?

Will 5 shave closer that 4?

Is a single blade razor something that should be in a museum?

These are all questions Gillette hope you answer yes to, with the introduction of the new Gillette Fusion^TM with a mighty 5 blades on the main shaving head and a single blade on the back to trim ya bits and if that wasn't enough there is a vibrating "Power" version too, now my hands shake enough most mornings so god knows what this does to improve the shave it may however boost the sale of loo roll.

Lets look at this honestly fellas, just how many more blades can these companies cram into a small bit of plastic? Even with one of Gillette's now inferior Mach 3 razors there is precious little room for stubble to pass through without clogging, use one of Lush's wonderful shaving cream's and you are forever unblocking the thing, turning what should be a two minute operation into a gungy battle of wills.

And why all this macho blade count rubbish? when the best shaves are from one of the babies on the left, a sharp straight razor, a good lather with real shaving soap and plenty of hot towels, OK so they are not for everyday use and I wouldn't attempt to use one after a night on the lash, but for smoothness and long lasting smoothness a straight is the way to go.

So, if one blade is better than 5 why go to all the bother? why not stop the BS and start introducing some decent features, like blades that last longer, or blades that don't cost a small fortune or how about making the razors invisible to the women in our lives...

Anyone who listened to BBC Five Live this this morning will have heard something very rare indeed, loudmouthed presenter Steve Nolan was left shocked and speechless, by one of his guests. but what left him in this state was something we blokes dream of...

Women approaching men and giving them their phone number, the gobby Irishman just couldn't handle women approaching men on a tube or a train and passing them notes with a number and maybe a message. When the guest (sorry the lady in questions name escapes me) defended herself she was accused of being of loose morals, she was asked what would happen if the guy thought she was after (shock horror) sex! our intrepid guest stated there was no reason why the invite for lunch or dinner couldn't be an offer of a hotel quickie instead.

Seems like that's all our presenter could take, throwing it open to the nation to comment, oh alright a couple of "Shocked of Tunbridge Wells" types who thought the idea abhorrent, like all topics that Five Live don't support we got one person who agreed, even calling our guest a pioneer! that was the last we hear of it.

The (not so) Secret Community part one.

First you got "The Game" from Neil Strauss, then you got "Seduction School" from Wayne "Juggler" Elise, the dark shadowy world of the seduction community is opening up more and more. The once dark arts of the pick-up artist are now online and available to all, at a price.

Neil Strauss recently published the sum of his work in the seduction world called "The Annihilation Method" a multi DVD/CD and booklet package it retailed at over $4000, yes you read right four thousand US Dollars and he even limited the availability to 375 "lucky" punters.

Now I don't know about you, but when I part with the best part of a fortnight in the Caribbean I want something decent in return, and Strauss disappoints on all fronts, the CDs are poor quality phone conference recordings that smell of filler, the booklets are an uninspiring mess of workbooks, some rehashes of the stuff in his book and even stuff from his online community days. The videos are well shot but god are they dreary, they plod along releasing each tiny piece of information like a miser spend his money.

In short this was Style's (Strauss community name) last hurrah in the seduction world, and his parting gift (if a gift can cost $4000) is poor, if you've read the book and watched a few brad Pitt movies there is little here to inspire you, and trust me, even if you read it from cover to cover and study all the video it won't turn you into a pick-up artist.

Similar "Opus" packages are in the pipeline from a number of seduction gurus, a Croat names Badboy has a two DVD set, Real Social Dynamics are about to push their next multi disk set and elder statesman David DeAngelo won't be far behind these two with another bag full of DVDs, none of these courses are cheap, DeAngelo's products cost around $500, and all these courses have one thing in common, they are all recordings of their seminars where real live punters go to hear the gurus speak and watch them in action whilst paying up to $1500 for the privilege, nice work indeed if you can get it.

Don't believe the hype.

So what inspired me to start this blog? well a few days ago someone sent me a link to http://www.thestylishman.com they have a huge sales letter advertising an eBook collection on mens health and style.

Looks interesting I thought, promise of some good content, some decent tips and its price was reduced from $99.95 right down to $24.95, a bargain, so I plugged in my details dusted off the old credit card and a few minutes later I had the "Easy at-home techniques to help you look your best!".

Now call me an old cynic, but when I part with some cash I'd like something decent in return not 4 crappy eBooks that look like the sort of thing you can buy on eBay for 99p complete with resell rights.

So what do you get for your money then? First up the book you paid the money for (the others are a "bonus" more of them in a moment), an 80 page .pdf that with a careful bit of formatting in Word could have fit on 20 pages, you know the deal, double line spacings, large type and half a dozen words per line. The content is virtually none existant, it tells me that its important to find out what skin-type I am but does little to help me determine this, I must wash my face or I'll get blackheads, pimples or spots...

Whoop de fuckin do, I can find all this information and more at any number of sites on the Internet, the plethora of mens magazines or one copy of Cosmo, if fact hang on, this guy has been reading Cosmo, thats where half of damn information is from, mind he could have bought it rather than sneaking a quick peek in the newsagent and only getting half of the goodies.

And now the "bonus" books...
Health is a choice is another one of those books from ebay deals, a collection of stuff anyone with half a brain should know, basically eat health, exercise, drink in moderation and don't do drugs, not rocket science even if the author went to M.I.T.

Natural skin care for men is nothing but a list of products that are erm, well, natural. Not even a link to their websites nor even a store selling them.

And now we come to the best of them all, a little 14 page opus called "Self Pleasuring" that's right fellas a book on jacking off, masturbating, wanking, solo love. The only thing that stopped me rolling around in laughter is the fact I'd paid for this, jeeze guys if you really need tips on self lovin read something like jackinworld, bags of tips for even the most experienced "jacker"

In short, avoid this like the plague, it brings mens health sites and publications into disrepute, rips you off, and leaves you feeling icky all in one nice package.
